Assistant to the director
1 feb 2026
The London Institute is hiring an assistant to the director to help him and others get things done and to coordinate their activities.
Background
The London Institute was founded over 10 years ago to speed up scientific discovery. About 60% of our team are scientists and 40% are writers, designers, fundraisers, PR experts and managers.
In recent years we have attracted government recognition and become a leading voice in the press. With the appointment of Talulah Riley and Ben Delo to our board of trustees, we’ve just launched a campaign to raise a £60m endowment, with £20m already committed. This is an opportunity to grow in size and raise our global reputation.
Job
The role is full-time and offers a competitive salary. Candidates are expected to work in the building—we do not work from home.
Activities include: Meet with and assist the director daily. • Manage his time and help him read and write emails. • Help prepare and submit funding applications. • Plan and organise events, such as talks and drinks parties. • Buy equipment and keep our accountant updated. • Allocate office space and assist with our decoration. • Manage our employees’ attendance. • Help members organise trips and do other administrative tasks. • Socialise with our team at our weekly drinks and regular events.
Candidate
Candidates should have high emotional intelligence and enjoy working with others. They should have a knack for solving new and unexpected problems. Because they will be working with leaders in government and business as well as science, they should have an intuitive understanding of custom and protocol.
The role involves shaping and maintaining our culture, so alignment with our values is essential. In particular, we are on the lookout for people who are sociable, relentless, team players, detail-oriented, curious about others and committed to showing up for work.
Clear and concise writing is a hallmark of the Institute, so candidates should be skillful writers and keen to get better. Familiarity with science is not necessary; rather, complementary skills can be an advantage.
