The mortality equation

Thomas Fink unveils a mathematical model showing programmed aging cannot be favoured by natural selection, even in a shifting environment.
Ageing is thought to be an inevitable consequence of breakdowns in how genetic information is processed. But mounting experimental evidence suggests aging can be slowed. To resolve this, Dr Thomas Fink, Director of the London Institute, derives a mortality equation that governs the dynamics of an evolving population with a given maximum age. His solution shows that programmed ageing cannot confer a long-term benefit.
