On functional freedom and Penrose's critiques of string theory

Philosopher James Read explores how ideas of functional freedom shape the renowned mathematician Roger Penrose’s critique of string theory.
In The Road to Reality and Fashion, Faith and Fantasy, theoretical physicist Roger Penrose criticises string theory from conceptual, technical and methodological perspectives, alongside sociological reflections on the string theory community. In this talk, Dr James Read assesses Penrose’s conceptual and technical criticisms, focusing on objections that invoke the idea of functional freedom and their implications.
Dr James Read is a philosopher of physics at Oxford University. His research focuses on the foundations of spacetime theories such as general relativity, as well as scrutinising what some of physicists’ best theories, including quantum mechanics, say about the nature of reality.
