Meet Edward Frenkel
5:30PM, 12 Dec 2025
Edward Frenkel charts his path from Moscow to Berkeley and the quest for a unified theory of maths with the London Institute and its guests.
Edward Frenkel is a professor of mathematics at UC Berkeley, a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and winner of the Hermann Weyl Prize. He is also the author of Love and Math—part memoir, part masterclass in mathematical storytelling—which became a New York Times bestseller and has been translated into 20 languages.
In this event, Prof. Frenkel joins London Institute Fellow Yang-Hui He and our chief science writer Ananyo Bhattacharya to reflect on his intellectual journey and tackle some of the most pressing questions in mathematics today. How can researchers argue for the value of basic science in a world of competing priorities? Will AI one day make human mathematicians obsolete?
The evening also offers a rare chance to hear an insider’s take on the Langlands programme—sometimes called the “grand unified theory of mathematics”—famed for its depth, difficulty and breathtaking beauty.
There will be time for audience questions and discussion over drinks.
Event information
The event is on Friday 12 December at the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences, which is on the second floor of the Royal Institution. Entry is by invitation only. The interview starts at 5:30 in our Faraday seminar room, followed by Q&A at 6:30. Afterwards there are drinks with the speaker into the evening, in the Faraday and Old Post rooms.

Speaker

Edward Frenkel is a professor of mathematics at University of California, Berkeley, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a DJ and author of the international bestseller Love and Math. His research focuses on the Langlands programme and its links to quantum physics.
