Mathematics in the age of AI: discovery, verification, and the future of proof

4 PM, 27 Nov 2026

Ken Ono explores how AI changes mathematical discovery and proof, and what these developments mean for rigor, creativity, and human insight.

What does it mean to do mathematics in the age of artificial intelligence? Prof. Ken Ono combines a personal mathematical journey with an overview of how AI changes the way mathematicians explore, reason and establish truth. He examines three central activities: discovering examples and conjectures, assisting with mathematical reasoning, and verifying proofs through formal systems such as Lean. Along the way, he considers both the promise of these tools and the unease they provoke.

New possibilities for discovery and proof-checking come with difficult questions about false reasoning, attribution, peer review, and access. How do we distinguish a convincing argument from a correct proof? What remains essential about human judgment and mathematical understanding? Drawing on his experience in research and AI, Prof. Ono separates practical advances from hype and considers how mathematicians can use these tools while preserving the rigor and creativity at the heart of their subject.

Event information

This event, part of our AI for Mathematical Sciences series, takes place at 4 pm on Tuesday 10 November at the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences, on the second floor of the Royal Institution. AIMS is sponsored by Nebius. This series is organised by LIMS fellows Prof. Yang-Hui He and Dr Evgeny Sobko. To subscriber for the series please fill out the online form.

Speakers

Ken Ono

Ken Ono is Commonwealth Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia and Founding Mathematician at Axiom Math. A number theorist, he studies modular forms, integer partitions and Ramanujan’s work, and now works at the intersection of mathematics, formalisation and AI.
