Geometry meets physics

Simon Telen presents his discovery of a new connection between polynomials inspired by particle physics and classical algebraic geometry.
Dr Simon Telen leads the numerical algebraic geometry group at the Max Planck institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. He studies toric amplitudes—rational functions inspired by the scattering amplitudes of particle physics but associated to arbitrary simplicial polyhedral fans. He describes the algebraic properties of such amplitudes and their zero loci, exploring their Fano schemes and singular loci.
