Galois groups in enumerative geometry

Prof. Frank Sottile of Texas A&M outlines the history and the state of the art of a keystone topic at the interface of algebra and geometry.
As Camille Jordan noted in 1870, problems in enumerative geometry have associated Galois groups, just as univariate polynomials do. Despite this pedigree, the subject lay dormant for a century, with systematic investigations of such Galois groups starting only in the past 15 years. Prof. Frank Sottile of Texas A&M University discusses recent advances in this area, describing the current directions and open problems.
