Chief graphic designer

22 FEB 2024

The London Institute is recruiting a world-class graphic designer to visualise our mathematical discoveries and enhance our visual identity.

Background

The London Institute is unique. That’s not only because we’re Britain’s first independent institute for physics and mathematics, but also because we believe that communicating and visualising our insights is as important as forming them. At the 2022 Webby Awards our website was named as one of five best science websites in the world, alongside Science and NASA. The Royal Institution, where we’re based, leads the world in science communication. Meanwhile, our commitment to science writing has seen us publish in periodicals from Nature to Nautilus.

Job

Now we are looking for an outstanding graphic designer to carve out a new role, which will take our design and science visualisation to the next level. This will involve liaising with our scientists to create original illustrations of their work, adding to and improving the design and graphics of our website, and helping us develop our soft power through our visual identity, events and relationships. The position is full-time and offers a competitive salary. You will be expected to work in our rooms in the Royal Institution—we do not work from home.

Candidate

This position requires a rare pairing of qualities: a proven flair for graphic design and an appreciation of mathematical principles. You will have several of the following: a degree in one of the mathematical sciences; experience at firms like Pentagram and A Practice for Everyday Life; a record of placing work in places like Eye, Wallpaper, Wired and Quanta; and experience in programming and Adobe Creative Cloud. Candidate values include ambition, enthusiasm, mastery, originality, perfectionism, precision, simplicity, style, teamwork and vision.

Activities

Create illustrations, graphics and plots for our scientists’ papers and presentations. ❧ Establish our visual identity and contribute to the design and typography of our website and printed material. ❧ Design information graphics that describe our institute. ❧ Work with our coder, designer, fundraiser and director to systematise our processes and visualise our progress. ❧ Build relations with the designers, writers and journalists who visit us at the Royal Institution. ❧ Socialise with our scientists and staff at our weekly drinks and regular events.

London Institute

The London Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a new kind of research organisation that is dedicated to speeding up discovery. Our full-time commitment to research, focus on peak performance, and the level of support we give our members empower our team to make the biggest breakthroughs. ❧ The Institute is based in the Royal Institution in Mayfair, which lays claim to 15 Nobel prizes and the discovery of 10 chemical elements and the principles of electromagnetism. ❧ You can learn more about the Institute at our story, values and opinions pages.
